In iaido training, traditional patterns of movement are practised, mostly as solo forms. There are no contests or sparring.
While iaido has its origin in the fighting methods of feudal Japan, it has undergone changes over time, and the emphasis is now placed on understanding correct technique and developing a calm and focussed mindset.
Beginners often start training with a traditional wooden sword called bokuto, and progress to metal swords later. Iaido is suitable for both female and male practitioners of all ages and fitness levels.
